Roberta Jeffries Bauman, 1923-2009
By Rhys Thomas
Roberta Jeffries Bauman, a real life Dorothy Gale who once owned a pair of Ruby Slippers worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz, has died in her hometown, Memphis, Tennessee, from complications of Parkinson’s disease. She was 86 years old.
Roberta won the fabled shoes in 1939 by placing second in an MGM sponsored contest to name the ten best movies of that year. She received her prize in a pasteboard shoebox, a pair of size 6B ruby slippers, worn in dancing scenes by Judy Garland during the filming of the movie. As Hollywood would have it, Roberta was 16 years old when she received the shoes, as was Judy Garland when she made the film.
“I tried them on to show them to my mom and daddy,” Roberta later said, “and then I just put them up in the wardrobe.” She stored the shoes for 30 years, with little thought of their cultural significance or value as Hollywood memorabilia. Then in May, 1970, another pair of ruby slippers was sold at the historic MGM Auction, fetching a record price of $15,000. Reports of the sale flashed instantly around the country and appeared in hundreds of newspapers, including Bauman’s morning paper, the Memphis Press Semitar.
The news came as a huge surprise to Roberta. “How could they sell the ruby slippers,” she said, “when they’re in my closet?” Roberta thought she owned the one and only pair of ruby slippers. It was an honest mistake. She had no way of knowing that movie costumers always made duplicates of important costumes. And neither did the buyer of the slippers sold at the MGM Auction.
When Mrs. Bauman pulled her ruby slippers out of her closet to show the media, she suddenly found herself in the middle of a real life Hollywood mystery story. No one knew how many authentic pairs of ruby slippers actually existed, and Roberta could only guess if hers were real, or fake. MGM and the auctioneers offered no answers.
Much like the unsuspecting Dorothy in L. Frank Baum’s novel, Roberta had no clue about the power and charm of the shoes, or where they would take her. It proved to be a remarkable journey.
Roberta Jeffries was born in Memphis on May 13th, 1923. Her upbringing was modest, shaped by the trials of the Great Depression. “I walked to school, little over a mile, had to walk in the cold and snow and everything. Sometimes we got to ride the street car. It cost 7 cents.”
During the late 1930s, movies were a refuge from the drab reality of economic hardship in the South. In 1939, Hollywood’s golden year for films, Roberta joined the Photoplay Club at Humes High School in Memphis—the same school later attended by Elvis Presley. Roberta and her classmates were encouraged by one of their teachers to enter the contest to name the Ten Best Movies of 1939.
Roberta listed Pygmalion, Gone With the Wind and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington as her favorites. Her entry was good enough win a second place in the contest. Her prize—the ruby slippers—was presented to her in February, 1940. She was told they had been worn by Judy Garland and displayed in New York City to promote the film.
Roberta graduated from Humes High in June, 1941. Any excitement about her ruby slippers was quickly forgotten the following December when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. The red-sequined shoes went into her closet, forgotten for many years. Then came the 1970 MGM auction, and Roberta became an instant celebrity among Oz collectors.
Roberta spent the next 15 years trying to solve the mystery of her ruby slippers—were they real or fake? She became a prolific correspondent, pounding out letter after letter on her typewriter—the clattering of keys a constant soundtrack in her daily life. Roberta’s typewritten missives were her trademark.
In March, 1988, Roberta was featured in a lengthy Los Angeles Times investigative report exploring the mystery of the ruby slippers and the emerging underworld marketplace for historic Hollywood memorabilia. The two-part article revived Roberta’s story and determined that her pair was, in fact, authentic, along with several other surviving pairs from the film.
On the heels of the article, Roberta consigned her pair of ruby slippers for auction at Christie’s East in New York City. The estimate and reserve placed on the lot was $15,000—the same amount that the MGM pair had sold for in 1970. Roberta’s pair sold in June, 1988, for ten times that amount. The price—$165,000—set a new record for Hollywood memorabilia. It became Roberta’s retirement nest egg. Just as Dorothy found her way home by clicking the heels three times, so did Roberta.
In May, 2000, Roberta’s shoes—now known among collectors as “Dorothy’s Shoes”—were auctioned again at Christie’s East, fetching another record price of $666,000. They have not been publicly seen since.
Roberta Bauman never expected anything from the ruby slippers, yet they came to define her life. If ever a Dorothy there was, Roberta Bauman was one.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Henry Bauman, a daughter, Joann, and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by sons Donald Bauman and Carl Bauman. Funeral services for Mrs. Bauman were held August 25 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Memphis, Tennessee.

THE WIZARD OF OZ 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition
It is difficult to imagine a motion picture more magical and more wonderful than Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's wonderful The Wizard of Oz. Over the last seven decades, the film has indelibly woven itself into America's cultural consciousness: Is there anyone who doesn't immediately think of the film upon hearing the words, "Dorothy," "Toto," "Emerald City," "Ruby Slippers" and "Yellow Brick Road" -- or the lines to the song "Over the Rainbow?"
Now, the colorful characters and unforgettable songs of Oz come alive as never before when Warner Home Video brings this cinematic treasure into the digital age with the September 29 Blu-ray release of The Wizard of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition. The commemorative edition contains nearly 4 hours of all-new and never-before-available bonus features and is housed in numbered collectible packaging, and will be available for a limited time only for $69.92 SRP (DVD) and $84.99 SRP (Blu-ray Hi-Def).
In order to bring all the visual splendor of The Wizard of Oz to the Hi-Def world of Blu-ray Disc, the film has been entirely remastered, with each of the original Technicolor camera negatives scanned using 8K resolution. From this scan, a final 'capture' master was created in 4K, yielding twice the resolution seen in the master utilized for the film's previous DVD release.
Working in 'full film Resolution', extreme care was taken to ensure that all of the image fidelity contained in the original negatives was properly captured for this new presentation. The sounds of Oz will come alive on Blu-ray disc utilizing the full audio spectrum capabilities available through Dolby TrueHD audio. The net result is one of unprecedented qualit y that is sure to make The Wizard of Oz 70th Anniversary Edition a benchmark in the history of the Blu-ray format.
There will also be a dedicated official site for all Oz-related events and products: http://thewizardofoz.warnerbros.com/
The following components are ALL-NEW and exclusive to this release:
The Dreamer of Oz - which makes its long-awaited home video debut. Also remastered the occasion, this full-length motion picture was an NBC-TV special event in 1990 and thrilled critics and audiences as it told the back story of author L. Frank Baum, "the Royal Historian of Oz." John Ritter shines in the title role -- the man who defied all odds to create the famous characters and stories. Annette O'Toole beautifully co-stars as his supportive wife, with Rue McClanahan as his challenging witch of a mother-in-law.
Victor Fleming, Master Craftsman -- a new feature-length documentary produced specifically for this release about the Hollywood director who, in the same year, miraculously brought both Oz and Gone With the Wind to the screen.
Hollywood Celebrates It's Biggest Little Stars-- a new featurette stars seven of the original "Munchkins of Oz" and tells the saga of the long journey, culminating in them receiving their own 2007 Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The Magic Cloak of Oz -- the first release of the complete 1914 silent film, including lost footage never before included in a home video presentation of this feature (produced by Baum himself).
The Patchwork Girl of Oz -- another 1914 Baum-produced, feature-length silent film, new to Warner Home Video.
The Wizard of Oz Sing-Along Track -- here making its home entertainment debut.
Reproductions of Archival Material -- Extraordinary renderings of the original 1939 Oz campaign, exploitation, and press books. These materials constitute a Hollywood "holy grail" for Oz, Garland, and motion picture fans alike and, for decades, have been among the most sought-after and impossible-to-find collectibles.
Behind The Curtain -- a 52-page miniature coffee-table book, assembled by pre-eminent Oz historian John Fricke. Encompassing much previously unpublished material, the deluxe volume includes behind-the-scenes Oz photographs, studio memos, and script pages for abandoned scenes and musical numbers.
Exclusive Wizard of Oz Watch -- A collectible and numbered 70th Anniversary watch, incorporating art from the film and enhanced with genuine crystals. Available nowhere else, this beautiful timepiece was created specially for this DVD edition.
And for the Blu-Ray Ultimate Collector's Edition, the original extended version of "If I Only Had a Brain" performed by Ray Bolger has been remastered in hi-definition especially for this release.
About the Movie
Adapted from L. Frank Baum's timeless children's tale about a Kansas girl's journey over the rainbow, The Wizard of Oz opened at Grauman's Chinese Theater on August 15, 1939. The film was directed by Victor Fleming (who that same year directed Gone With the Wind), produced by Mervyn LeRoy, and scored by Herbert Stothart, with music and lyrics by Harold Arlen an d E.Y. Harburg. Ray Bolger appeared as the Scarecrow; Bert Lahr as the Cowardly Lion, Jack Haley as the Tin Woodman. Frank Morgan was seen in six different roles, including that of the "wonderful Wizard" himself. Dorothy was portrayed by a 4'11" sixteen year old girl who quickly earned her reputation as "the world's greatest entertainer"-- the incomparable Judy Garland.
The Wizard of Oz received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and captured two Oscars® -- Best Song ("Over the Rainbow") and Best Original Score -- plus a special award for Outstanding Juvenile Performance by Judy Garland. The film was an overwhelmingly popular and critical success upon its initial release and repeated its ability to captivate audiences when M-G-M reissued the film in 1949 and 1955. The film made a new kind of history with its network television premiere in 1956 on CBS. Nearly 45 million people tuned in for this initial telecast, marking the beginning of an annual tradition. Ever since, The Wizard of Oz has been shown virtually annually on network (and then cable) television; its magical story and heartfelt performances have enabled it to grow from a perennial classic to its current status as a treasured icon of popular culture.

Hello,
I'm writing to let you know that for the past 7-9 months or so, countless
alleged "Wizard of Oz" props authenticated by a company known as Global
Antiques have been sold on _eBay_ (http://www.ebay.com/) . Unfortunately, it has
been determined that all of these items are suspect for fraud. As you will
see in the following links, a number of these pieces have been found to
post-date the film/TV productions from which they came. Furthermore, numerous
items allegedly owned by certain Hollywood greats and historical icons have been
found to succeed the individual's death. Thereby, disputing the claim that
the items are original and authentic.

I thought you and your site visitors might want to be aware of this
situation as these alleged props are in circulation. Should you ever come across a
COA that reads "City of Los Angeles, Global Antiques" please be aware. The two
eBay sellers involved in this matter were Auction Depot LA (auctiondepotla1)
and Auction Shop USA (auctionshopusa). _eBay_ (http://www.ebay.com/) has
recently suspended the auctiondepotla1 account after numerous complaints about
the illegitimacy of the items. auctionshopusa voluntarily closed their
account prior to that.
As a collector/preservationist of classic film, it is particularly upsetting
to see Hollywood's history so gravely misrepresented while thousands of
people have unknowingly been deceived.
Should you or your visitors have any questions or want additional
information please feel free to contact me.
Thanks for your time,
Todd

Hello Ozzy Friends,
First, many thanks to all of you for supporting Hungry Tiger Press. It is much appreciated. Being such a small company, and trying to do so much, can be trying at times. Kind words AND book orders are a very nice reward. We rely heavily on word-of-mouth advertising and hope you will encourage your friends and acquaintances to try a Baum or Oz book.
I wanted to give you all a quick TIGER UPDATE! Our new edition of L. Frank Baum's THE FLYING GIRL AND HER CHUM has arrived from the printer and all of the standing orders have been filled. Order a copy today!
If you are unfamiliar with Baum's non-Oz writing, I highly recommend FLYING GIRL AND HER CHUM. It really is a very good book with well defined-characters and a pretty good plot. Come on, give it a try!
And all three of Walt Spouse's Comic series adaptations of THE LAND OF OZ, OZMA OF OZ, and THE EMERALD CITY OF OZ are available, too.
JOHN DOUGH is still a couple weeks away - I do regret the delays. If you are interested in the slip cased limited edition - I would suggest pre-ordering. It will be a most handsome book!
Again, Thanks for your recent support. Each and every order helps to make future projects possible.
The very best Ozzy wishes to you all!
